Iron Man(2008)

…Robert Downey Jrs. Comeback Role

This movie was the start of my superhero/ marvel obsession..which I never thought I would indulge in. Robert Downey Jr. being one of my role models is what kick started the obsession for me. I decided to sit down and watch the movie, and was pleasantly surprised.. it wasn’t as nerdy as I thought it would be (or maybe it was and I am biased.)

Besides being flat out entertaining this movie proved that superhero movies could be both funny and emotional as well.

I am not going to go into a deep summary, but some basic points to make:

Kicks off with us seeing this obscenely wealthy Tony Stark who is a weapon making legacy to his father, and he runs ‘Stark Industries.’ We get a firm background of just who Tony Stark is before he is Iron Man. He comes off as a shallow, arrogant, sarcastic, GENIUS, ladies man.. the LAST person you’d associate with being a selfless hero.

(I feel that RDJ plays these kinds of character very well and often)

..This is where the movie portrays excellent character development. We see Tony finally start to mature, and lean into the role of Iron man, this isn’t to say there aren’t some hiccups and learning curves along the way.

Robert Downey Jr. is absolutely lovable as Iron Man, and I feel as though he made the role his own.

FUN FACT: RDJ had been in trouble for YEARS as he was blacklisted from acting, and was an addict. He fell victim to the child star cliche of becoming a mess. The movie Less Than Zero was almost a weird prediction and parallel into the fast life of RDJ. Despite all these hardships and embarrassments THIS was his comeback role and Marvel studios took a chance on a now sober Robert Downey Jr. and let me just say IT PAID OFF.

Iron Man is the start of the Avengers series, and Marvel has now created a whole universe almost based on how well this movie took off.

As a huge Marvel fan, my recommendation if you are interested in beginning the universe series is to start here.

I always love getting additional context on key movies in the industry, so this was a cool trip back to 2008 for me.
